Lead Times

The truth is, good furniture takes time.

Every Relic Modern™  piece is built by me, start to finish, in my Minneapolis studio — no warehouse, no assembly line. I select and mill the lumber, join, sand, and finish each piece by hand. That care takes time, but it's also why the wait exists: it's the difference between something pulled off a shelf and something built for you, by hand, meant to last generations.

About this Piece

A mid-century modern bookcase, handmade to order in Minneapolis — geometric proportions and varied shelf openings sized to hold a library, display favorite objects, anchor a room, or work as a freestanding room divider. The varied openings give the piece visual rhythm — some sections sized for books, others for a single sculpture, vase, or well-placed object.

The form is a direct nod to the mid-century era, and Relic Modern™ puts its own spin on it — most distinctly in the edge-grain Baltic birch feet, which reveal the layered wood as a design detail rather than hide it.

Three sizes handle most rooms. The 48" × 48" suits a reading nook, entryway, or compact home office. The 60" × 60" anchors a living room or dining room wall. The 72" × 72" is beautifully finished from every angle making it perfect as a room-defining library staple or freestanding funtional room divider in open-concept layouts.

Opening sizes, shelf placements, and overall dimensions can be adjusted on request. Reach out if a standard configuration doesnt fit the space or use.

Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a matte, warm look that enhances the natural grain of the walnut or maple.

Materials

Built from 13-layer solid wood Baltic birch with a walnut or maple face — a stable, sustainable core that doesn’t move with the seasons the way solid wood can. The layered Baltic birch edges are left exposed as a signature detail and a nod to the designers of the mid-century era. Handmade in Minneapolis.

(01) Wood: 13-layer Baltic birch with walnut or maple face

(02) Finish: pure tung oil, boiled linseed oil, beeswax, carnauba wax — a durable, water-resistant matte finish that feels like silky-smooth wood

Product FAQ

(01) How long until the piece ships? This piece is handmade to order in Minneapolis. Current lead time is listed in the box above the Add to Cart button. See Shipping, Pickup & Returns for details.

(02) Will the wood color change over time? Yes. The walnut face will deepen and take on warmer, reddish tones over the first year or two, and the maple face will warm into a deeper honey color — both are natural characteristics of the species and part of what makes the piece feel alive. The hand-rubbed oil and wax finish supports this patina rather than sealing it off.

(03) How do I care for this piece? Use coasters, wipe up spills, and keep rough objects off the surface. A damp cloth is all that’s needed for cleaning — no furniture polishes. The piece can be refreshed with a bit of furniture wax when it feels dry. Additional details are on the FAQ page.

(04) Can I see a wood sample before ordering? Yes. A wood sample of the Baltic birch with the chosen face — walnut, maple, or edge-grain Baltic birch — and the oil and wax finish is available through the shop.

(05) Does this require assembly? No. It arrives ready to go upon delivery or pickup.

(06) Can the shelf placement be customized? Yes — opening sizes, shelf placements, and overall proportions can be adjusted on request. Reach out for pricing on a customized configuration.

(07) Edge-Grain Legs The legs on this piece are built from glued-up Baltic birch — the same layered core used throughout the Relic Modern collection — cut and oriented so the striped layers become the visible face on all four sides.

The outward-angled cut is doing quiet work. Beyond the mid-century stance it gives the piece, the angle pulls the flat Baltic birch face out of view entirely, leaving only the layered edges on every visible surface. It's a deliberate piece of material discipline — the same exposed-layer language that defines the piece's top and edges, carried all the way to the floor.

(08) Can I see this piece in person? Yes. The 5' Bookcase is on display at the Minneapolis showroom, alongside the full furniture collection. See showroom hours or book an appointment.

Real Furniture,Made by Real Hands

I build every piece by hand in my Minneapolis workshop — one maker, one standard, no shortcuts. While big-box stores fill warehouses with particle board and mass-produced templates, Relic Modern™ starts with real, high-quality wood and ends with something built to last. Some things are worth buying from a real person.

Mid-century modern isn't a trend — it's a discipline. Clean lines, reasonable proportions, and modest, organic shapes. At Relic Modern™, that means stripping every design down to its essential form and building it from high-quality Baltic birch with walnut or maple faces, finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend that lets the wood speak for itself.
