About this Piece
A walnut accent chair and matching ottoman in the mid-century strap-chair tradition — upright, tailored, and reductionist, built for the reading corner and the conversation nook. The frame is a 28-layer laminated Baltic birch with a walnut face, joined with traditional mortise and tenon work, with angled side supports that give the chair its distinctive silhouette and carry through to the ottoman. The seat and back are hand-woven from a 2” cotton fabric strap (in white, black, cobalt blue, olive green, or burnt orange) or a 4” Portofino leather strap in saddle tan. Available as a set, or chair and ottoman separately. Suited to a den, a reading nook, an entryway, a hotel lobby, or a boutique waiting room — residential or light commercial.
The silhouette is thoughtfully resolved, defined as much by its angles as by its verticals. The back is canted gently for upright reading posture. The side frames step inward as they meet the floor, giving the chair its distinctive profile. The ottoman’s seat is pitched slightly away from the chair, so the knees bend naturally and the calves rest along the top rather than dropping off the edge. The chair and ottoman share the same geometric language, so the pair reads as a single designed object rather than two pieces placed together.
The fabric version reads lighter and more textile; the leather reads quieter and more serious, and develops a real patina over years of use. The set is built to residential scale but stands up to light commercial contexts — hotel lobbies, boutique retail, designer waiting rooms, short-term rental interiors — where the lack of upholstery to wear through and the hand-rubbed finish mean the piece ages in rather than wears out.
Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a warm, tactile matte look that enhances the natural grain of the walnut.

Real Furniture,Made by Real Hands
I build every piece by hand in my Minneapolis workshop — one maker, one standard, no shortcuts. While big-box stores fill warehouses with particle board and mass-produced templates, Relic Modern™ starts with real, high-quality wood and ends with something built to last. Some things are worth buying from a real person.
Mid-century modern isn't a trend — it's a discipline. Clean lines, reasonable proportions, and modest, organic shapes. At Relic Modern™, that means stripping every design down to its essential form and building it from high-quality Baltic birch with walnut or maple faces, finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend that lets the wood speak for itself.
