Lead Times

The truth is, good furniture takes time.

Every Relic Modern™  piece is built by me, start to finish, in my Minneapolis studio — no warehouse, no assembly line. I select and mill the lumber, join, sand, and finish each piece by hand. That care takes time, but it's also why the wait exists: it's the difference between something pulled off a shelf and something built for you, by hand, meant to last generations.

We recently ordered our fourth piece from Relic Modern and can't wait to add to our collection. The pieces are stunning, so well made, and the Baltic birch layers are so unique.

Accent Chair & Ottoman

More information

About this Piece

A walnut accent chair and matching ottoman in the mid-century strap-chair tradition — upright, tailored, and reductionist, built for the reading corner and the conversation nook. The frame is a 28-layer laminated Baltic birch with a walnut face, joined with traditional mortise and tenon work, with angled side supports that give the chair its distinctive silhouette and carry through to the ottoman. The seat and back are hand-woven from a 2” cotton fabric strap (in white, black, cobalt blue, olive green, or burnt orange) or a 4” Portofino leather strap in saddle tan. Available as a set, or chair and ottoman separately. Suited to a den, a reading nook, an entryway, a hotel lobby, or a boutique waiting room — residential or light commercial.

The silhouette is thoughtfully resolved, defined as much by its angles as by its verticals. The back is canted gently for upright reading posture. The side frames step inward as they meet the floor, giving the chair its distinctive profile. The ottoman’s seat is pitched slightly away from the chair, so the knees bend naturally and the calves rest along the top rather than dropping off the edge. The chair and ottoman share the same geometric language, so the pair reads as a single designed object rather than two pieces placed together.

The fabric version reads lighter and more textile; the leather reads quieter and more serious, and develops a real patina over years of use. The set is built to residential scale but stands up to light commercial contexts — hotel lobbies, boutique retail, designer waiting rooms, short-term rental interiors — where the lack of upholstery to wear through and the hand-rubbed finish mean the piece ages in rather than wears out.

Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a warm, tactile matte look that enhances the natural grain of the walnut.

Materials

Built from 13-layer solid wood Baltic birch with a walnut face — a stable, sustainable core that doesn’t move with the seasons the way solid wood can. Two sheets are laminated together to form a 28-layer body, joined with traditional mortise and tenon work. The layered Baltic birch edges are left exposed as a signature detail and a nod to the designers of the mid-century era. Handmade in Minneapolis.

(01) Wood: 13-layer Baltic birch laminated to a 28-layer body, with walnut face

(03) Strap (leather variant): 4” veg-tanned Portofino shoulder leather strap, saddle tan, fully conditioned

(04) Finish: pure tung oil, boiled linseed oil, beeswax, carnauba wax — a durable, water-resistant matte finish that feels like silky-smooth wood

Product FAQ

(01) How long until the piece ships? This piece is handmade to order in Minneapolis. Current lead time is listed in the box above the Add to Cart button. See Shipping, Pickup & Returns for details.

(02) Will the wood color change over time? Yes. The walnut face will deepen and take on warmer, reddish tones over the first year or two — a natural characteristic of the species and part of what makes the piece feel alive. The hand-rubbed oil and wax finish supports this patina rather than sealing it off.

(03) How do I care for this piece? Wood: Use coasters, wipe up spills, and keep rough objects off the surface. A damp cloth is all that’s needed for cleaning — no furniture polishes. The piece can be refreshed with a bit of furniture wax when it feels dry.

Straps: Fabric straps have been ScotchGuard™ treated; wipe spills up immediately with a damp cloth. Leather straps are fully conditioned before delivery and can be refreshed with a leather conditioner every year or two.

Additional details are on the FAQ page.

(04) Can I see a sample set before ordering? Yes. A Chair Material Sample is available that includes the Baltic birch with walnut face, the oil and wax finish, all five cotton fabric strap colors, and the Portofino leather strap.

(05) Is this chair comfortable for long reading, or just short sits? Built for upright comfort — reading, conversation, coffee — in the tradition of mid-century strap chairs. The seat is supportive and the back is upright, so the body stays in a natural reading posture. For a chair to sink into for long movies or naps, this isn’t the right chair. For a chair that keeps the body upright and the back supported while reading, this is built for exactly that.

(06) Does this require assembly? No. The piece ships fully assembled.

(07) Can I see this piece in person? Yes. The Accent Chair and Ottoman are on display at the Minneapolis showroom, alongside the full furniture collection. See showroom hours or book an appointment.
