About this Piece
A chess and checkers set that sits on a coffee table or shelf as a sculptural object — and turns into a game when someone reaches for the pieces. The solid walnut and maple chess pieces carry inlaid Baltic birch patterns that map each piece's movement. The checkers pieces are made of solid walnut and maple. The board alternates layered edge-grain Baltic birch and solid walnut, square by square. A game and a work of fine art.
The full Chess and Checkers Set is the centerpiece configuration: chess pieces, checkers pieces, board, and three nested storage boxes — a mid-century modern game-and-display piece meant to live on a coffee table, dining table, side table, or shelf, in a living room, den, library, study, or family room. The Chess Set and Checkers Set on their own carry the same craft for buyers who want just one game.
The board measures 15" square: layered edge-grain Baltic birch on the light squares, solid walnut on the dark, with rubber feet underneath to keep it planted during play.
The chess pieces are inlaid with Baltic birch patterns that mark each piece's role:
- King — a deep block of inlay, distinctive from the other pieces.
- Queen — a circle, for her freedom to move in any direction. (An extra queen ships with every set, for promotions.)
- Bishop — a diagonal line, for diagonal movement.
- Knight — an L, for the knight's jump.
- Rook — a plus sign, for movement along ranks and files.
- Pawn — no inlay, and shorter than the rest.
The checkers pieces carry their own logic: light pieces are solid maple with a walnut stripe laminated around the side, dark pieces are solid walnut with a maple stripe — each species wrapped in the other.
Each game's pieces store in their own walnut-faced Baltic birch box. The chess box and checkers box sit centered on the board for display. With the full set, an outer box nests both — three boxes at home on the board between games, or a single box left out as a quieter object.
Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a matte, warm look that enhances the natural grain of the walnut and maple.
