Lead Times

The truth is, good furniture takes time.

Every Relic Modern™  piece is built by me, start to finish, in my Minneapolis studio — no warehouse, no assembly line. I select and mill the lumber, join, sand, and finish each piece by hand. That care takes time, but it's also why the wait exists: it's the difference between something pulled off a shelf and something built for you, by hand, meant to last generations.

End Table No. 1

More information

About this Piece

This handcrafted mid-century modern end table is the most iconic piece in the Relic Modern™ collection — the curved corners are bent from a single sheet of Baltic birch, with the layered edges left exposed as a signature detail. Call it a side table, accent table, or bedside table; the tapered legs and clean lines make it at home in a living room, lounge, den, or bedroom. The optional dovetailed maple drawer with Blum® soft-close slides turns it into a modern nightstand. This end table pairs well with the Entry Table and Cocktail Table.

The curve is the whole idea. Forty-four kerf cuts into a single sheet of 13-layer Baltic birch let the material bend into its final shape — and the result is a seamless one-piece silhouette with the layered edges left exposed as a signature detail, a nod to the designers of the mid-century era. The rounded form softens the lines of a room and makes the piece read lighter than its footprint, at home next to a sofa, at the side of a bed, or as an accent in a hallway or lounge.

Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a matte, warm look that enhances the natural grain of the walnut or maple.

Materials

Built from 13-layer solid wood Baltic birch with a walnut or maple face — a stable, sustainable core that doesn't move with the seasons the way solid wood can. The layered Baltic birch edges are left exposed as a signature detail and a nod to the designers of the mid-century era.

(01) Wood: 13-layer Baltic birch with walnut or maple face

(02) Drawer (optional): solid maple, dovetailed, on soft-close under-mount Blum® slides with six-way adjustments

Product FAQ

(01) How long until the piece ships? This piece is handmade to order in Minneapolis. Current lead time is listed in the box above the Add to Cart button. See Shipping, Pickup & Returns for details.

(02) Will the wood color change over time? Yes. The walnut face will deepen and take on warmer, reddish tones over the first year or two, and the maple face will warm into a deeper honey color — both are natural characteristics of the species and part of what makes the piece feel alive. The hand-rubbed oil and wax finish supports this patina rather than sealing it off.

(03) How do I care for this piece? Use coasters, wipe up spills, and keep rough objects off the surface. A damp cloth is all that's needed for cleaning — no furniture polishes. The piece can be refreshed with a bit of furniture wax when it feels dry. Additional details are on the FAQ page.

(04) Can I see a wood sample before ordering? Yes. A wood sample of the Baltic birch with the chosen face — walnut or maple — and the oil and wax finish is available through the shop.

(05) Does this require assembly? No. This piece is built fully assembled.

(06) Can I customize this piece? Some customizations may be possible. Please reach out before ordering.

(07) What are kerf cuts? The cuts made to bend the wood are called "kerf cuts." The "kerf" refers to the thickness of the saw blade — and therefore the slit in the wood the blade leaves behind. The End Table's curved corners are created by kerf-cutting through the layers of Baltic birch up to the final face — 44 cuts in total. Once the slits are made, the material bends into its final shape, and the result is a seamless one-piece look.

(08) Can I see this piece in person? Yes. End Table No. 1 is on display at the Minneapolis showroom, alongside the full furniture collection. See showroom hours or book an appointment.
