Lead Times

The truth is, good furniture takes time.

Every Relic Modern™  piece is built by me, start to finish, in my Minneapolis studio — no warehouse, no assembly line. I select and mill the lumber, join, sand, and finish each piece by hand. That care takes time, but it's also why the wait exists: it's the difference between something pulled off a shelf and something built for you, by hand, meant to last generations.

We worked with Justin to modify his media cabinet design to fit our needs, and were drawn to his mid-century aesthetic and his masterful designs using laminated wood. We were beyond pleased with the result!

About this Piece

Media Console No. 1 is Relic Modern's signature take on a mid-century TV stand — slatted sliding doors that nest left, right, or center create a grill-cloth effect built from edge-grain Baltic birch. Available in 60" and 76" lengths with a walnut or maple face, the piece works as a TV stand, credenza, sideboard, buffet, or storage cabinet and is functional in a living room, den, dining room, bedroom, office, or entryway. The custom angled legs are layered Baltic birch cut at 45 degrees and hand-shaped — a sculptural detail unique to the collection.

The cabinet body is built from 13-layer Baltic birch topped with solid walnut or maple — all real wood, no particle board, no paper veneer. Rabbet joinery is visible in each of the four corners and on the top. Each side of the cabinet includes an adjustable shelf with pins included, and two cord passages are cut into the back near the top.

Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a matte, warm look that enhances the natural grain of the walnut or maple.

Materials

Built from 13-layer solid wood Baltic birch with a walnut or maple face — a stable, sustainable core that doesn't move with the seasons the way solid wood can. The layered Baltic birch edges are left exposed as a signature detail and a nod to the designers of the mid-century era. Handmade in Minneapolis.

(01) Wood: 13-layer Baltic birch with walnut or maple face

(02) Finish: pure tung oil, boiled linseed oil, beeswax, carnauba wax — a durable, water-resistant matte finish that feels like silky-smooth wood

Product FAQ

(01) How long until the piece ships? This piece is handmade to order in Minneapolis. Current lead time is listed in the box above the Add to Cart button. See Shipping, Pickup & Returns for details.

(02) Will the wood color change over time? Yes. The walnut face will deepen and take on warmer, reddish tones over the first year or two, and the maple face will warm into a deeper honey color — both are natural characteristics of the species and part of what makes the piece feel alive. The hand-rubbed oil and wax finish supports this patina rather than sealing it off.

(03) How do I care for this piece? Use coasters, wipe up spills, and keep rough objects off the surface. A damp cloth is all that's needed for cleaning — no furniture polishes. The piece can be refreshed with a bit of furniture wax when it feels dry. Additional details are on the FAQ page.

(04) Can I see a wood sample before ordering? Yes. A wood sample of the Baltic birch with the chosen face — walnut or maple — and the oil and wax finish is available through the shop.

(05) How do the sliding doors work? The doors run on a hidden track — a narrow groove cut into the top and bottom of the cabinet opening, with a small metal tab on the back of each door riding in the groove. The tab stays hidden behind the door, so only the groove itself is visible. Smooth lateral travel, and the doors can be positioned on either side or nested in the center.

(06) Does this require assembly? No. The piece arrives fully assembled, ready for placement upon delivery or pickup.

(07) Can I customize this piece? Some customizations are possible. Reach out before ordering to discuss options.

(07) Can I see this piece in person? Yes. Media Console No. 1 is on display at the Minneapolis showroom, alongside the full furniture collection. See showroom hours or book an appointment.
