About this Piece
The kidney-shaped silhouette of this minimalist mid-century modern tray reads as nothing more than sculptural curves, but up close it reveals the layered stripes of edge-grain Baltic birch wrapping every face — rippling visibly along both the inside concave curve and the outside convex curve. Built from multiple sheets of Baltic birch laminated and turned on their side, the layered stripes run through the wood and appear on every surface. The shape was designed to echo the curves of the Cocktail Table, where the two read as if drawn from the same line. It's the kind of piece you find yourself looking at from different angles — across the room, from above, in passing — because the curves and the layered stripes catch differently from each one. It works equally well as a sculptural object on a console, sideboard, or shelf and as a functional catch-all on an entry table, coffee table, or nightstand.
Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a matte, warm look that enhances the natural grain of the edge-grain Baltic birch.

Real Furniture,Made by Real Hands
I build every piece by hand in my Minneapolis workshop — one maker, one standard, no shortcuts. While big-box stores fill warehouses with particle board and mass-produced templates, Relic Modern™ starts with real, high-quality wood and ends with something built to last. Some things are worth buying from a real person.
Mid-century modern isn't a trend — it's a discipline. Clean lines, reasonable proportions, and modest, organic shapes. At Relic Modern™, that means stripping every design down to its essential form and building it from high-quality Baltic birch with walnut or maple faces, finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend that lets the wood speak for itself.
