Lead Times

The truth is, good furniture takes time.

Every Relic Modern™  piece is built by me, start to finish, in my Minneapolis studio — no warehouse, no assembly line. I select and mill the lumber, join, sand, and finish each piece by hand. That care takes time, but it's also why the wait exists: it's the difference between something pulled off a shelf and something built for you, by hand, meant to last generations.

About this Piece

A minimalist, sculptural silhouette of one of the most beloved animals — these wooden elephant figurines are rendered in walnut and Baltic birch, sized to sit on a shelf, a mantel, or in a nursery. The form is smooth, simple, and intentionally pared back, giving the piece a quiet presence in a room without demanding attention. Offered in three sizes — Small, Medium, and Large — or as a set of three that reads as a family. A thoughtful gift, and a piece the giver often ends up keeping.

Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a matte, warm look that enhances the natural grain of the walnut.

About Doris

From Justin, founder of Relic Modern™:

Doris the Elephant, named after my grandmother, is a special piece for me. Doris Coffman (b. 1930, d. 2007) didn’t live the easiest of lives. At a young age she lost most of her sight and was considered legally blind. As she progressed through life, she lost most of her hearing, suffered from diabetes, and survived cancer. Despite the hardships, she found Joy. Her first love was her husband, Jim, and they shared a bond that has likely yet to be rivaled — it was an embodiment of the word “love” itself. Her second love was her collection of elephant figurines. For whatever reason, she loved elephants and her home was filled with hundreds of elephant statues, toys, photos, tables, and various tchotchkes.

This sculptural elephant has been created in her memory.

Dimensions

Overall dimensions and weight

  • Small: 4½"W × 4½"H × 1½"D, 8 oz.

  • Large: 10"W × 11"H × 1½"D, 2 lbs 12 oz.

Orientation

  • Reversible — the walnut face is finished on both sides, so the elephant can face either direction on a shelf.
Materials

Built from 28 layers of laminated Baltic birch with a walnut face. The thickness gives the piece weight and presence, and the layered Baltic birch edges are left exposed as a signature detail.

(01) Wood: 28-layer laminated Baltic birch with walnut face

(02) Finish: pure tung oil, boiled linseed oil, beeswax, carnauba wax — a durable, water-resistant matte finish that feels like silky-smooth wood

Product FAQ

(01) How long does shipping take? This piece is made in batches and ready to ship from Minneapolis. Current lead time is listed in the box above the Add to Cart button. See Shipping, Pickup & Returns for details.

(02) Will the wood color change over time? Yes. The walnut face will deepen and take on warmer, reddish tones over the first year or two — a natural characteristic of the species and part of what makes the piece feel alive. The hand-rubbed oil and wax finish supports this patina rather than sealing it off.

(03) How do I care for this piece? A damp cloth is all that’s needed for cleaning — no furniture polishes. The piece can be refreshed with a bit of furniture wax when it feels dry. Additional details are on the FAQ page.

(04) Are both sides finished the same, or does the elephant have to face one direction? The elephants are fully reversible — both sides are finished in walnut. Feel free to have them facing left, right, or huddled in a circle, whichever arrangement works for the room

The Maker Behind Every Piece

Real Furniture,Made by Real Hands

I build every piece by hand in my Minneapolis workshop — one maker, one standard, no shortcuts. While big-box stores fill warehouses with particle board and mass-produced templates, Relic Modern™ starts with real, high-quality wood and ends with something built to last. Some things are worth buying from a real person.

Mid-century modern isn't a trend — it's a discipline. Clean lines, reasonable proportions, and modest, organic shapes. At Relic Modern™, that means stripping every design down to its essential form and building it from high-quality Baltic birch with walnut or maple faces, finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend that lets the wood speak for itself.
