Every Relic Modern™  piece is built by me, start to finish, in my Minneapolis studio — no warehouse, no assembly line. I select and mill the lumber, join, sand, and finish each piece by hand. That care takes time, but it's also why the wait exists: it's the difference between something pulled off a shelf and something built for you, by hand, meant to last generations.

About this Piece

A handmade mid-century modern desk in walnut or maple — 48 inches of working surface reduced to essentials, sized for a home office, study, bedroom, or guest room. The walnut or maple face is grain-matched across the top so the surface reads as one continuous plane, and the tapered legs are angled outward to lift the desk visually while it stays planted on the floor. Dovetailed solid-maple drawers run on soft-close Blum® slides, with cutout pulls milled into the face to keep the front free of hardware. The exposed layered Baltic birch edges carry the signature material language of the Relic Modern™ collection.

Optional cord management is available as a free variant — a 1½" pass-through hole drilled through the top surface and straight out the underside, so cables drop cleanly to the floor and the desk can push flush against a wall. The hole is finished with an exposed Baltic birch edge and a soft roundover, matching the material language of the rest of the piece. Inside, the back cavity gives about 2" of depth for slack management — extra cable length can be tucked out of sight rather than pooling on the floor. Choose left, center, or right placement to match your monitor or lamp setup, request a custom placement, or leave the top clean with no hole at all.

Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a matte, warm look that enhances the natural grain of the walnut or maple.

Materials

Built from 13-layer solid wood Baltic birch with a walnut or maple face — a stable, sustainable core that doesn’t move with the seasons the way solid wood can. The layered Baltic birch edges are left exposed as a signature detail and a nod to the designers of the mid-century era. Handmade in Minneapolis.

Product FAQ

(01) How long until the piece ships? This piece is handmade to order in Minneapolis. Current lead time is listed in the box above the Add to Cart button. See Shipping, Pickup & Returns for details.

(02) Will the wood color change over time? Yes. The walnut face will deepen and take on warmer, reddish tones over the first year or two, and the maple face will warm into a deeper honey color — both are natural characteristics of the species and part of what makes the piece feel alive. The hand-rubbed oil and wax finish supports this patina rather than sealing it off.

(03) How do I care for this piece? Use coasters, wipe up spills, and keep rough objects off the surface. A damp cloth is all that’s needed for cleaning — no furniture polishes. The piece can be refreshed with a bit of furniture wax when it feels dry. Additional details are on the FAQ page.

(04) Can I see a wood sample before ordering? Yes. A wood sample of the Baltic birch with the chosen face — walnut or maple — and the oil and wax finish is available through the shop.

(05) Does this require assembly? No. The piece ships fully assembled and is ready to use upon delivery or pickup.

(06) Can I customize this piece? Yes. Customizations including depth, hardware, and cord management are possible. Please reach out before ordering to confirm feasibility.
