Lead Times

The truth is, good furniture takes time.

Every Relic Modern™  piece is built by me, start to finish, in my Minneapolis studio — no warehouse, no assembly line. I select and mill the lumber, join, sand, and finish each piece by hand. That care takes time, but it's also why the wait exists: it's the difference between something pulled off a shelf and something built for you, by hand, meant to last generations.

Platform Bed Frame

More information

About this Piece

The platform bed frame anchors the bedroom with a single uninterrupted span of walnut or maple face running edge to edge across the headboard — the focal point of the piece, with the layered Baltic birch revealed where it meets the rails. The form is reduced to essentials — headboard, footboard, rails, platform — with no applied trim, no upholstered panel, no decorative hardware; the exposed Baltic birch layered edges that run through the Relic Modern™ collection do the visual work where other bed frames rely on applied detail. The frame is built around a center support system — two inner rails and four adjustable leveling legs on the king, one inner rail and two adjustable leveling feet on the queen and full — engineered for long-term structural integrity without dip, sag, or the creak of a bolted-together frame. Assembly is tool-free. Available on its own or with the matching dresser and nightstands — as a bedroom set or à la carte.

Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a matte, warm look that enhances the natural grain of the walnut or maple.

Materials

Built from two sheets of 13-layer solid wood Baltic birch laminated together — 28 layers total — with a walnut or maple face, a stable, sustainable core that doesn't move with the seasons the way solid wood can. The layered Baltic birch edges are left exposed as a signature detail and a nod to the designers of the mid-century era. Handmade in Minneapolis.

(01) Wood: Two sheets of 13-layer Baltic birch laminated together (28 layers total) with a walnut or maple face

(02) Hardware: Surface-mounted metal brackets at the headboard and footboard; center rails drop into wood-on-wood seats and slip into place after the outer frame is assembled, with slats resting on top; center-rail leveling feet adjust by hand

(03) Finish: Pure tung oil, boiled linseed oil, beeswax, carnauba wax — a durable, water-resistant matte finish that feels like silky-smooth wood

Product FAQ

(01) How long until the piece ships? This piece is handmade to order in Minneapolis. Current lead time is listed in the box above the Add to Cart button. See Shipping, Pickup & Returns for details.

(02) Will the wood color change over time? Yes. The walnut face will deepen and take on warmer, reddish tones over the first year or two, and the maple face will warm into a deeper honey color — both are natural characteristics of the species and part of what makes the piece feel alive. The hand-rubbed oil and wax finish supports this patina rather than sealing it off.

(03) How do I care for this piece? Wipe up spills, and keep rough objects off the surface. A damp cloth is all that's needed for cleaning — no furniture polishes. The piece can be refreshed with a bit of furniture wax when it feels dry. Additional details are on the FAQ page.

(04) Can I see a wood sample before ordering? Yes. A wood sample of the Baltic birch with the chosen face — walnut or maple — and the oil and wax finish is available through the shop.

(05) How does it assemble? Side rails slide into surface-mounted brackets at the headboard and footboard, then the footboard locks onto the side rails. The center rail (one on queen and full, two on king) drops into wood-on-wood seats inside the frame, with leveling feet that hand-twist flush to the floor. Slats rest on top and slip into place. No tools, no hardware bag.

A short assembly video is available on request — just reach out before or after ordering.

(06) Can I customize this piece? Some minor customizations may be possible. Please reach out before ordering

(07) Can I see this piece in person? Yes. The headboard and side rails of the queen bed is on display at the Minneapolis showroom, alongside the full furniture collection. See showroom hours or book an appointment.

The Maker Behind Every Piece

Real Furniture,Made by Real Hands

I build every piece by hand in my Minneapolis workshop — one maker, one standard, no shortcuts. While big-box stores fill warehouses with particle board and mass-produced templates, Relic Modern™ starts with real, high-quality wood and ends with something built to last. Some things are worth buying from a real person.

Mid-century modern isn't a trend — it's a discipline. Clean lines, reasonable proportions, and modest, organic shapes. At Relic Modern™, that means stripping every design down to its essential form and building it from high-quality Baltic birch with walnut or maple faces, finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend that lets the wood speak for itself.
