Lead Times

The truth is, good furniture takes time.

Every Relic Modern™  piece is built by me, start to finish, in my Minneapolis studio — no warehouse, no assembly line. I select and mill the lumber, join, sand, and finish each piece by hand. That care takes time, but it's also why the wait exists: it's the difference between something pulled off a shelf and something built for you, by hand, meant to last generations.

Nightstand No. 2

More information

About this Piece

A reduced-silhouette bedside table that reads as quiet furniture in a busy bedroom — integrated-leg form, open-shelf cubbies, and the exposed Baltic birch layered edges that run through the Relic Modern™ collection. A fixed shelf creates two open cubbies — a shallower one above for smaller objects, a deeper one below for larger items. Pairs with the companion dresser and bed for a full bedroom set, and works as a side table or end table in smaller rooms. Available with a walnut or maple face.

The shelves are built using rabbet and dado joinery — clean surfaces for a reading pile, special heirloom or whatever the bedside calls for, with the top offering a third surface for a lamp or an alarm clock. At 20" wide and 24" tall, the piece is scaled to sit cleanly beside a platform bed and works equally well as an end table in a living room, a guest room piece, or a small surface in a home office or reading nook.

Complete the bedroom set with the companion Dresser and Bed. Need drawers instead? See Nightstand No. 1.

Dimensions can be customized to fit the room — taller for a traditional bed height, wider for a larger footprint, or adjusted to match an existing set. Reach out before ordering to discuss.

Finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend, the piece has a matte, warm look that enhances the natural grain of the walnut or maple.

Materials

Built from 13-layer solid wood Baltic birch with a walnut or maple face — a stable, sustainable core that doesn’t move with the seasons the way solid wood can. The layered Baltic birch edges are left exposed as a signature detail and a nod to the designers of the mid-century era. Handmade in Minneapolis.

(01) Wood: 13-layer Baltic birch with walnut or maple face

(02) Finish: pure tung oil, boiled linseed oil, beeswax, carnauba wax — a durable, water-resistant matte finish that feels like silky-smooth wood

Product FAQ

(01) How long until the piece ships? This piece is handmade to order in Minneapolis. Current lead time is listed in the box above the Add to Cart button. See Shipping, Pickup & Returns for details.

(02) Will the wood color change over time? Yes. The walnut face will deepen and take on warmer, reddish tones over the first year or two, and the maple face will warm into a deeper honey color — both are natural characteristics of the species and part of what makes the piece feel alive. The hand-rubbed oil and wax finish supports this patina rather than sealing it off.

(03) How do I care for this piece? Use coasters, wipe up spills, and keep rough objects off the surface. A damp cloth is all that’s needed for cleaning — no furniture polishes. The piece can be refreshed with a bit of furniture wax when it feels dry. Additional details are on the FAQ page.

(04) Can I see a wood sample before ordering? Yes. A wood sample of the Baltic birch with the chosen face — walnut or maple — and the oil and wax finish is available through the shop.

(05) Does this require assembly? No. The piece arrives fully assembled and finished, ready to place.

(06) Can custom holes for cords be added? Yes. Specify where the holes should go when placing the order, or reach out before ordering to discuss.

(07) Can this piece be customized? Yes. Dimensions can be adjusted to almost any size — commonly requested are a taller height for traditional bed frames or a wider footprint for king-bed placement. Shelf configuration, cord pass-through holes, and finish details can also be adjusted. Reach out before ordering to discuss the specifics.

(08) Can I see this piece in person? Yes. Nightstand No. 2 is on display at the Minneapolis showroom, alongside the full furniture collection. See showroom hours or book an appointment.

Mid-century modern isn't a trend — it's a discipline. Clean lines, reasonable proportions, and modest, organic shapes. At Relic Modern™, that means stripping every design down to its essential form and building it from high-quality Baltic birch with walnut or maple faces, finished with a hand-rubbed oil and wax blend that lets the wood speak for itself.
